I met a Northern Inuit dog for the first time, whilst attending a dog training class with my German Shepherd. I was so intrigued by the breed I spent a long time on the internet reading as much info I could find. I was very surprised to find so many bad things written about them; the biggest thing was that these dogs are wolf hybrids. I found this very difficult to believe so I did some research on wolf hybrids, and found it fascinating to discover that these animals along with pure wolves cannot be trained like a forever juvenile domestic dog. Whilst a wolf or the hybrid is still a juvenile, he will often respond to commands that he is given because it is very important for a young wolf to obey older pack members in order for his survival, but once he reaches adulthood it becomes more important for him to become independent. He will no longer do what his human pack member tells him to do, this instinct that nature has proivded the wolf is far too deeply imbedded to be harnessed and over written by us mere humans. So it became quite clear to me after seeing several well behaved and well trained Northern Inuit's that these dogs ane not wolf hybrids. Some reports claimed that Northern Inuit's could not be trusted off the lead like Husky's, and recall was impossible, they are very difficult to train and are very stubborn (they can be strong willed but not stubborn) this is not strictly true, but as with all breeds there are exceptions to the rule so care must be taken when choosing a puppy. Care must also be taken when choosing a breeder as there are some health problems within the breed such as Hip Dysplasia, Epilepsy and retained testicles. As with all breeds there are some unscrupulous breeders out there, do NOT just take the word of a breeder when asking about hip scores, insist on being shown the BVA certificates for both the Dam and the Sire and that the score is no higher than 17, breeders that are advertising true hip scores will be more than happy to show them to you, also ensure that the sire has two fully descended testicles. If you have any questions about the health, trainability or temperment of the Northern Inuit dogs please do not hesitate to contact me or The Inuit Dog Association for answers. My Northern Inuits has given, and continues to give me so much happiness and joy I can truly recommend this breed to anyone that is patient, persistenet, consistent, and has a good sense of humour.
